In March, we saw a gathering of like-minded folks across Europe unpacking the notion of ‘Tech for Good’ at our panel discussion in Paris. More than just a feel-good initiative, this panel discussion, co-hosted with Professional Singaporeans Overseas, delved into the critical underpinnings of leveraging technology for positive social, environmental, and economic impact. The conversation transcended mere altruism, probing the essential realms of ethical governance, cross-sector and cross-border collaboration, and a deeply rooted commitment to deploying emerging technologies in a truly inclusive and responsible manner.
The stage for this crucial dialogue was set by Ms Foo Teow Lee, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to the French Republic, whose opening remarks underscored the significance of this discussion within the framework of Singapore and France’s Joint Year of Sustainability. Guiding this enriching exchange was moderator Theresa Austin, expertly navigating the insights of a distinguished panel featuring Barbara Grabiwoda, Chief Strategy Officer of Publicis Groupe CEE; Arnaud Melilli, Director of APAC Investments at Choose Paris Region; Areeba Rehman, CEO & Founder of FRETBAY; and Abiel Neo of the Singapore Economic Development Board.

The recent discourse on the France-Singapore Digital and Green Partnerships offered attendees a compelling vision of how cutting-edge technologies are being deployed to tackle pressing social and environmental challenges. The event showcased tangible pathways towards a more sustainable world, from circular economy solutions reimagining waste to renewable energy powering a cleaner tomorrow. The ongoing Joint Year of Sustainability between France and Singapore has demonstrably amplified the economic allure of these burgeoning sustainable industries, signalling a powerful synergy between environmental responsibility and economic growth.
Beyond the crucial legislative framework, the discussions underscored the pivotal role of governments in actively nurturing sustainable businesses and igniting innovation. Compelling examples from France and Singapore illustrated proactive governmental support, fostering an environment where sustainable solutions can thrive and scale.
However, the narrative extended beyond technological prowess and governmental action. While technology holds immense potential as a game-changer, the panellists passionately emphasized the ethical responsibility of citizen consumers in shaping a truly sustainable future. The power of grassroots movements and individual participation was highlighted, reinforcing the notion that "Tech for Good" transcends mere dialogue; it is a dynamic and evolving movement fueled by collective action.

The critical juncture where innovation meets ethics also took centre stage, with panellists engaging in a vital debate on the ethical governance of big technology. Navigating the delicate balance between technological advancement and ethical considerations remains a paramount concern in practice. The resounding message was clear: fostering a sustainable future demands a collaborative ecosystem, one where governments, innovative startups, and an engaged civil society work in concert to drive meaningful change. The insights shared painted a hopeful yet pragmatic picture, emphasizing that a sustainable future is not just a possibility but a goal attainable through strategic partnerships, technological ingenuity, and the collective will of individuals and institutions alike.

Keep an eye out for future events as we continue to shape dialogues across different cities. We will be in Dresden, Germany, next month. Drop by for a night of networking and join us for our next conversation on Humanizing Artificial Intelligence.
